Calilo – Luxury Hotel in Ios Island Greece

The Lowdown

In the heart of the Cyclades, between Santorini and Mykonos, Ios is easily reached whether you’re looking to fly in directly to Calilo and decompress in the luxury of your private suite (the resort has a private helipad and dock) or whether you’re planning to stop off for a few days to soak up the island’s cultural sights, spectacular beaches, pristine natural landscapes and buzzing nightlife as part of a wider island-hopping itinerary.

The Rooms

Calilo’s 30 suite-sized rooms offer comfortable king-sized beds surrounded by walls and ceilings hand-mosaiced with 72,000 pieces of local marble (per room). Expansive bathrooms  with huge round stand-alone tubs are made entirely of dramatic mainland marble, so richly patterned it is like a landscape in itself. Outside, most rooms have their own pool, a raised cabana with double bed to sleep out in should you wish, and a cascade of water splashing lightly into two or three plungeable ‘pond-pools’. At least one wall of the room is a sliding French window with remote-control one-way blinds so you can enjoy the view without anyone viewing you.

Services and facilities

By swimming in the lovely bay, you can look out at the azure Aegean and distant islands or back at the yellow coarse-sand beach with thatched thick-mattressed cabanas, and Calilo surrounded by shade-giving trees. Some are centuries-old olive trees rescued from a fate as firewood and shipped from the mainland. Between beach and bar-restaurant lies the lovely curved 50-metre swimming pool, with extra mini-pools and in-water tables. Trails lead up onto otherwise-untouched promontories  now accessible in the hotel’s electric buggies as well as on foot.

Friendly staff – and the owners, who are a regular presence  can arrange catered private time on four pristine beaches or in ‘caves’ in the rocky hillside. Calilo has its own boats and a range of bespoke events and tours. From 2020 there will be a substantial spa and gym, along with more rooms, caves and trails.

Food & Drinks

Pizza ovens and barbecues complement a menu of Greek dishes and contemporary European cuisine. The moussaka made, in season, with aubergine and tomatoes from the hotel’s own organic garden  is excellent, but you might equally enjoy onion leaf rolls with lemon foam, black seed and spearmint emulsion. Food is served all day, and breakfast is an extensive buffet with everything from fresh fruit, home-made yogurt and local honey to delicious Greek specialities such as cheese pie and custard-filled pastries. And of course there’s eggs, bacon, sausage, croissants and more
