The Lowdown
The location, tucked into Chinatown, right next to the increasingly cool Porta Volta neighborhood and close to the financial district. A 30-minute walk brings you to tourist hotspots like the Piazza del Duomo, the city’s main square, but regular visitors to Milan will relish the 15-minute stroll to the chic Corso Como, which is well stocked with excellent fashion boutiques and hip shopping and dining complexes.
The Rooms
All of Hotel VIU Milan’s 124 soundproofed rooms provide minibars, free bottled water, and safes. Guests can expect 49-inch flat-screen TVs with cable channels, along with free WiFi and wired Internet. Beds are dressed in premium bedding and pillow menus, and bathrooms offer hair dryers and designer toiletries. Monochromatic shades of luxe Venetian textiles, marble bathrooms, Malin + Goetz toiletries, and planted open-air terraces add to the generally soothing, earthy feel.
Food & Drinks
Breakfast is served on the rooftop. There’s a colourful buffet of fruits and a handful of other items including small cakes and gluten-free biscuits; baskets with jams, bread and croissants are served at each table, and hot dishes are made to order. Morelli Restaurant, named after chef Giancarlo Morelli, serves traditional Milanese cuisine. For a slightly different dining experience, take a seat at the kitchen table and see him in action. The more informal Bulk Restaurant serves excellent Italian and international dishes with a handful of South American favourites (guacamole and ceviche both feature on the menu). Award-winning sommelier and mixologist Mattia Pastori is at the helm of Mixology Lounge Bar and Garden. It’s a great spot for an aperitivo or a post-dinner drink. Small bites and light dishes can be ordered throughout the day.
Services and Facilities
Staff are chatty, welcoming and friendly, and the service is good but very much a casual affair. The panoramic rooftop terrace is the main draw, with a (smallish) swimming pool and bar. There’s a gym with Technogym equipment, sauna, steam room and multi-sensory showers.
