19 Jul Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel
The Lowdown
The painstaking renovation of Monastero Santa Rosa, a 17th-century monastery, has resulted in a unique Amalfi boutique hotel steeped in history, lavished with top-quality furnishings, and set in gloriously scented tiered gardens. Perched dramatically on the edge of a sheer cliff above that blue, blue Bay of Salerno in the fishing village of Conca dei Marini, the 20 ocean-view rooms and Santa Maria Novella-stocked spa are remarkably spacious and utterly romantic.
The Rooms
Each of the 20 rooms and suites at Monastero Santa Rosa is named after a herb that the nuns would have used in making medicines from the Monastero Santa Rosa garden. Most are composed of two or more monastic cells, cleverly preserved and linked together with their en-suite bathrooms to create sumptuous bedrooms, each with a spellbinding sea view stretching from Conca dei Marini’s fishing harbour below to Amalfi beyond.
The suites have been individually designed with furniture hand picked by the owner, Bianca, in the course of her travels in Italy. One-of-a-kind antiques accent the suites while historical black and white photographs taken before the renovation show the historic building as it once was. The suites vary in size with each space completely unique—some with elegant living and dining rooms as well as terraces swathed in bougainvillea offering enchanting views over the Gulf of Salerno and the enchanting fishing village of Conca dei Marini.
Services and facilities
The Spa at Monastero Santa Rosa was dug directly from the cliff rock, and seems worlds away from the stress of daily life. Relax in the tiepidarium, steam room, ice fountain, sauna cave, massage pool, spa shower, and foot baths.
For true indulgence, the Spa Suite includes beds for beauty and water treatments and a private outdoor sundeck shaded by a lush pergola.
Food & Drinks
The hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Ristorante Il Refettorio, is headed up by Chef Christoph Bob, useing fresh ingredients sourced from the surrounding Campania region to create delightful Mediterranean gourmet dishes. Dinner is served in either the formal dining room or on the more relaxed area on the outdoor terrace overlooking the spectacular sea views. Lunch is a relaxed affair and can be served poolside or on the terrace. The hotel bar is located on the lower level of the hotel, on a cooler evening you can enjoy a cocktail or two in the bar library or on a hot summers evening you can sit under the stars on the bars outdoor terrace.
