There are luxury lodges—and then there is Royal Malewane. Tucked deep within the Greater Kruger National Park, this iconic safari destination offered me an experience that was nothing short of transformational. I had the privilege of staying at both Malewane Lodge and Waterside Lodge, each with its own soul, style, and story—but both delivering the kind of refined, intimate luxury that lingers long after you’ve left.
The Lowdown
Royal Malewane is part of The Royal Portfolio, and it represents their most exclusive and wild property. It blends the raw beauty of the African bush with impeccable taste and service. What makes it truly special is the sense of stillness it offers: complete immersion in nature without ever sacrificing comfort. Whether you’re listening to lions at night or sipping Amarula at sunrise, every moment feels meaningful here.
The Lodges

Malewane Lodge is regal and rich in character—dark woods, Persian rugs, antique furnishings, and that old-world colonial charm. My suite felt like a grand safari dream: a canopy bed, a private plunge pool, and a deck overlooking a waterhole where elephants casually wandered past. It was opulent, without ever feeling overdone.
Waterside Lodge, on the other hand, is its fresh, contemporary sibling. Here, the palette is lighter—natural textures, soft colors, and clean lines. It feels like a serene, design-forward escape that still retains its wild essence. My suite at Waterside was an oasis of calm, surrounded by nature yet completely modern. Moving between the two was like switching between two beautiful moods—one bold and timeless, the other fresh and quietly luxurious.
Experiences & Safari

The safari experience at Royal Malewane is next-level. I was guided by some of the most experienced rangers and trackers in Africa—including legendary names in the industry. Every game drive brought intimate wildlife encounters: a leopard at golden hour, lions on the hunt, rhinos grazing at dawn. The attention to detail, from the beautifully packed coffee stops in the bush to the chilled towels waiting back at the vehicle, made each drive feel personal and unforgettable.
Spa & Wellness
Royal Malewane is also home to one of the most serene and beautifully integrated wellness experiences I’ve encountered in the wild. Nestled in the natural surroundings, the spa invites you to unwind with a mix of world-class treatments, healing rituals, and peaceful spaces that open to the sights and sounds of the bush. Whether it’s a massage after a sunrise game drive or a quiet moment in the relaxation area, the spa offers a deep sense of calm and connection—both to yourself and the land around you.
Cuisine & Dining
Dining here is a celebration of South African flavor, elegance, and creativity. Whether I was enjoying a private dinner under the stars or a relaxed lunch by the pool, every meal was thoughtfully prepared. The chefs are true artists, seamlessly blending local ingredients with global techniques. I’ll never forget the sunrise bush breakfast, with freshly baked pastries and hot coffee served on a remote hilltop as the world slowly woke up around us.
